Little Red Leaf

There was a little maple leaf,

that wished to be a coral of the reef.

“If only I wasn’t stuck in this tree,”

sighed the maple leaf, thinking about what he could be.

“What about a beautiful star of the night,

shining brightly and guiding the wishes by sight?

Oh my, that’s much better than a coral of the sea!

For a star! Look at that, what a beautiful thing I could be.

We each have five points, although I’ve got a stem,

in fall I could show-off my color-changing act to them.”

The maple leaf pondered his place in the tree,

his family of leaves, fitting the branches like sleeves.

“Way up in the stars I would miss my family down below,

I would miss the way autumn winds blow me ‘round to and fro.

I suppose being a little red maple leaf is really not so rough,

so next time I’ll try and remember when I’m not feeling quite enough,

That berries and apples and birds grow with me,

kids find me and carry me and trace me with glee.

To wish, is a good thing, some wishes, they come true,

but who I am right now is beautiful and who you are right now is too.”
